Drug Free Pain Management and the Opioid Epidemic

Overdose deaths involving prescription opioids have quadrupled since 1999, and so have sales of these prescription drugs. Ninety-nine percent of primary care doctors routinely prescribe potentially addictive opioid painkillers for longer than the three-day period recommended by the CDC.
The CDC guidelines and the National Pain Strategy share an important element to address the out-of-control opiate environment in the U.S.: encouraging medical doctors to utilize non-pharmacologic, conservative care and consider non-addictive alternative options, behavioral changes and non-addictive pain relievers.

For the overwhelming number of people who suffer with chronic pain, chiropractic care offers a drug-free, non-invasive and cost-effective alternative to opioid drugs. As longtime advocates of drug-free management of acute, subacute and chronic back, neck and neuro-musculoskeletal pain, the chiropractic profession is aligned with these important initiatives and committed to actively participate in solving the prescription opioid addiction crisis. A profession dedicated to health and well-being, Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) are educated, trained and positioned to deliver non-pharmacologic pain management and play a leading role in “America’s Opioid Exit Strategy.”
